  • Advancing research activities in digitalisation, security and renewable energies - this is what the Burgenland Research IT Centre at the campus in Eisenstadt stands for.

The new laboratory and research building of Forschung Burgenland houses 30 employees from three research and competence centres. Ongoing and future research projects from the ‘Smart Computing Continuum’ centre and the ‘Energy Transition’ and ‘Sustainable Innovation’ research areas are supported there using state-of-the-art technology.


Architecture and concept

The laboratory building contains 29 rooms, covering around 650 m2, with a spatial volume of around 2,000 m3. 15 rooms on the ground floor and 14 on the upper floor. The centrepiece of the interior is the auditorium with a surrounding gallery. The experimental set-up room and the assembly hall on the ground floor are visually connected by a large glass wall and can be combined for exhibitions and events. All other office and meeting rooms with the corresponding sanitary facilities and storage rooms are accessed via the assembly hall. The rooms on the upper floor are accessed via the gallery. They are predominantly offices with the corresponding ancillary rooms, as well as a social room with generous glazing to the terrace in front. This covered outdoor space forms the link between the gallery, the covered connecting walkway and thus the university of applied sciences. The positioning on the access area is intended to increase the opportunity for contact and have a positive influence on the working atmosphere.

Building services

The building has an air/water heat pump system, which provides both the heating and cooling energy required for the building. Combined metal heating and cooling ceiling sails in the offices as well as underfloor heating/cooling in some areas, designed as a change-over system, ensure a pleasant indoor climate within the building, both in summer and in the winter months.

A central ventilation system with heat recovery and integrated exhaust air heat pump also ensures hygienic indoor air conditions and a reduction in energy consumption for building temperature control. The supply air is introduced directly into the offices of the building, while the exhaust air is removed at central points inside the building core. Sound-insulated transfer air openings on the interior walls ensure that the supply air introduced flows over them. Instead of the usual approach of concealing the building services installations so that they are not visible, the building services and electrical installations are visible as an additional design element in the office building.
