CO2 Countdown Award for Research Burgenland

At the CO2 Countdown Award 2023, the PRELUDE project won both the jury and audience awards, beating off competition from all over Austria.

Pinkafeld, 11 October 2023: The PRELUDE project (Prescient building Operation utilizing Real Time data for Energy Dynamic Optimisation) of Forschung Burgenland deals with technical possibilities for taking a close look at technical building procedures and processes. The aim is to carry out optimisations automatically in order to save energy, costs and resources, as well as to reduce the CO2 emissions of buildings.

At the CO2 Countdown Award 2023 organised by the Network for Facility Management Austria, PRELUDE impressed both the expert jury and the public in the voting and won in the category ‘Creatively rethought’. The project partners in this EU-funded Horizon2020 project come from all over the world. The project is managed by Forschung Burgenland. The project will run until June 2024. Technical information:PRELUDE supports the energy transition through the combined use of innovative, smart, low-cost solutions and a proactive optimisation service. The individual requirements of all relevant stakeholders (owners, operators, users, energy suppliers, etc.) are taken into account. The synergetic use of rule-, model- and AI-based methods means that the solutions developed are versatile and scalable for different building types. Specifically, passive measures to reduce system complexity and training times as well as established methods such as data-driven model-based control strategies (MPC) and predictive maintenance (PM) are applied. The holistic approach chosen enables a high level of interoperability and multi-layered flexibility options to be utilised and also offered externally (district heating, electrical grid, etc.). In addition, PRELUDE enables the automated evaluation of existing buildings so that targeted and cost-efficient refurbishment measures can be derived in a structured and well-founded manner. The methods and tools developed will be developed using the ENERGETIKUM Living Lab and validated by means of long-term tests. The functional demonstration will then be carried out using real buildings in Turin, Geneva, Krakow, Athens and Aalborg. The aim is to demonstrate an energy saving potential of over 35% and a reduction in maintenance and servicing costs of over 39%.
