The main aim of this initiative is to develop comprehensive strategies and measures, so-called ‘climate neutrality roadmaps’. These roadmaps should then also serve as a model for other cities and municipalities. Along the way, the selected municipalities support each other with learnings, experiences and tips and tricks.
Participation in this mission emphasises the important role that Eisenstadt plays in the national context of climate neutrality. ‘As a pioneering small town, Eisenstadt has the opportunity to develop innovative approaches and solutions that can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable lifestyles in the long term,’ explains Mayor Thomas Steiner, who goes on to emphasise: ’Our commitment shows that even smaller towns can and want to make a significant contribution to climate protection. We can thus provide impetus and contribute ideas not only in Burgenland, but also at a national level.’
Cities are not only the economic, cultural and social engines of our world, they are also responsible for around three quarters of global CO2 emissions. Cities and municipalities therefore play a central role in the fight against climate change. Eisenstadt is endeavouring to implement strategies and measures to successfully and quickly achieve climate and sustainability goals. This project is supported by two research institutions, Forschung Burgenland and the AIT-Austrian Institute Of Technology.
According to the AIT: ‘The Klima.Eisen.Stadt project is developing a climate neutrality roadmap that shows Eisenstadt the path towards becoming a climate-friendly city. We are delighted to be able to support the city as a research partner with practice-orientated tools and methods!’
‘Forschung Burgenland is supporting Eisenstadt on its way to a climate-neutral future. Together with our project partners, we are using local expertise, research skills and technological know-how,’ explains Forschung Burgenland.
Overall, this success marks an important milestone on the road to climate neutrality and shows that significant progress in climate protection is possible through targeted funding and joint commitment.
About the ‘Climate Neutral City’ mission
The ‘Climate Neutral City’ mission supports Austrian cities and municipalities in becoming climate neutral more quickly through research and development. Expertise and functioning strategies and measures that contribute to achieving climate and energy targets are to be exchanged and promoted with other cities. The focus is on climate-friendly solutions for the energy and mobility transition as well as the circular economy. The participating cities are supported by the Ministry of Climate Protection (BMK) and the Climate and Energy Fund in cooperation with the Salzburg Institute for Spatial Planning and Housing (SIR), the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (ÖGUT), AustriaTech - the federal government's organisation for technology policy measures and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).
