9th International Summer School on Sustainable Buildings for Europe

The 9th International Summer School on Sustainable Buildings took place from 18 to 27 September 2024 at the Pinkafeld campus of Burgenland University of Applied Sciences. 26 students, including 9 international participants and 17 students from the host institution (BEUM-5 and BGET-5 degree programmes), worked intensively on the topics of renewable energy and sustainable building technologies. The project organised by the Department of Energy and Environmental Management offered students the opportunity to develop practical solutions in international teams. International participants were able to apply for a CEEPUS scholarship.

The aim of the summer school was to provide a comprehensive overview of renewable energy technologies such as heat pumps, biomass and photovoltaics as well as energy efficiency in buildings. In addition to theoretical units, the programme included practical laboratory work and excursions to apply what had been learned.

Interdisciplinary project work was a central component of the programme. The teams planned sustainable office buildings, integrating architectural, energy and ecological aspects. Mentors from the professors accompanied the teams.

Highlights included the excursion to Vienna's "Campo Breitenlee", a showcase project for positive energy districts, as well as the final dinner at the "Steinerei" restaurant, which marked the festive conclusion of the summer school.
