Under the leadership of FIB, e-mobility is to be integrated into the local distribution network in a way that benefits the grid, whilst increasing security of supply and helping to prevent blackouts through increased local generation of renewable energy. Accu4VehicleANDGrid is developing an innovative battery infrastructure system designed to support the high penetration of commercial electric vehicles into the medium- and low-voltage grid, with a particular focus on the municipal sector. At the heart of the project is a vehicle-independent, interchangeable battery system that can be used both in electric commercial vehicles and in a stationary capacity within buildings. The storage systems offer self-optimisation for local energy generators as well as bidirectional functions for grid stabilisation based on smart grid integration and advanced communication technology. However, charging and discharging purely for the benefit of the grid, without taking vehicle usage into account, would be insufficient. Therefore, a newly developed AI-supported management system links the vehicle, battery, local energy system and grid operations centre to optimise the deployment of the vehicles within the distribution network. The project’s innovations are being tested in a living lab at the municipal works yard, initially individually and subsequently in a networked operation. The test vehicle is the EMPA-Trac municipal EV, developed as part of FFG project 865450. The results will be incorporated into the Austrian e-mobility strategy and climate neutrality targets, and will be disseminated via the companies of Burgenland Holding.
