The first section of the extension study analyses the market supply of combined heat and power systems based on fuel cells. The main focus here is on the provision of electricity and heat for commercial and industrial applications. Similar to the previous CHP study, the frequently used technologies and types are also listed here with regard to the utilisation of renewable energies, as well as stack performance and long-term stability, including advantages and disadvantages. A detailed presentation of the physical principles is omitted. Furthermore, a breakdown of various temperature ranges in commercial and industrial operations is provided.

In the second section, thermal and electrical generator and load profiles with the planned application options are developed with the help of analysis tools. A dedicated post-processing tool in the Matlab® programming environment will be used for this. In addition, real measurement data from commercial operations will be integrated for validation. The control and regulation strategies of fuel cell-based CHP systems are explained with the help of the results of the load profile analyses. These approaches form the basis for testing the feasibility of different fuel cell and CHP system concepts for heat extraction at different temperature levels (process heat) according to the previous categorisation. Finally, the added value for various commercial applications is clearly described. The aim is to utilise fuel cell combined heat and power plants in their entirety via the . In addition, electrical grids at district level also enable the realisation of load balancing potential. Similarly, the use of waste heat potential can also be optimised by coupling it out into various processes.
