This area has been identified as one of the most important at regional and local level. Better and comprehensive planning and monitoring tools are needed to improve waste heat utilisation. The CE-HEAT partnership developed three specific objectives to provide solutions for waste heat utilisation:
- Create a monitoring platform through a GIS-based regional waste heat cadastre with waste heat sources, their classification and a monitoring tool.
- Development of comprehensive solutions for the management of waste heat utilisation projects and strategies through the development and use of a toolbox for waste heat (participation process of leading actors, establishment of feasibility, etc.).
- Integration of the new cadastre and toolbox into spatial planning and existing energy management systems and distribution throughout the CE area and beyond.
Regional/local energy policy represents the first level of CE-HEAT target groups as well as decision makers, spatial planners and regional steering groups. At the second level are waste heat producers, potential investors and local stakeholders.
The transnational approach will enable the partners from Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland to build on different experiences, knowledge and skills and to develop solutions to a common problem. In addition, different scenarios will be tested in several pilot projects, adding value to the project.

Project to recover energy from excess waste heat in Central Europe
- Special session at the international SZE conference in Slovenia
Eisenstadt, 20 March 2019 - The CE-HEAT project is organising a specialist event on the potential of using waste heat in Europe as part of the SZE 2019 (Sustainable and Clean Energy Supply for Heating and Cooling) international conference on sustainable and environmentally friendly energy in the heating and cooling sector, which will take place on 1 April in Portorož, Slovenia.

This event will look at waste heat as an important energy source that is still underutilised today, but will be one of the energy systems of the future due to its great potential. The speakers at this specialist event will present a range of tools/possibilities (strategic and technical) that have been developed as part of the Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE project CE-HEAT with the aim of promoting and facilitating the implementation and use of waste heat utilisation plants.
Among other things, the waste heat cadastre, a tool for better planning for policy makers and for the identification of regional waste heat potential for strategic energy investments, will also be presented. In addition, a software solution will be presented to support decision-making by realising pre-feasibility studies that take into account certain technical and economic parameters of the waste heat project (waste heat calculator and DSS-Decision Support System).
A successful example of a waste heat action plan and an energy strategy will be presented. A number of pilot projects will also be presented. The conference will be accompanied by a panel discussion on the next steps needed to develop and improve the utilisation of waste heat in Central Europe and on the wider use of tools for waste heat recovery.
