Thermal spas are an important factor in the Austrian tourism landscape. In order to be able to offer this pleasant leisure activity, the facilities require enormous amounts of energy. This is often obtained from fossil fuels. Sustainable operation is a major concern for guests and operators. As part of the "Vorzeigeregion Energie", the GEO.MAT project is developing concepts for decarbonising thermal spas and demonstrating them in two real thermal spa operations. The aim is not only to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, but also to tap into efficiency and flexibility potential. For example, waste heat from cooling systems can be utilised. The backwash water also contains large amounts of energy that can be utilised with heat pumps. The enormous quantities of water also offer great flexibility for load shifting. Combined with intelligent, predictive control, this potential can be utilised. For the energy producers or the supply grid, the flexible consumers facilitate efficient operation. The findings of the project should be scalable to other spas and wellness centres.
