Energy, Equity, Equality

Energie & Umwelt

E3 explores social justice and intersectionality in the energy transition. The project identifies barriers in smart homes, e-mobility and energy communities, and develops recommendations for fairer, more inclusive technologies. The aim is a socially balanced, participatory and climate-resilient energy transition.

The E3 – Energy, Equity, Equality project examines how the energy transition can be made more socially just and inclusive. Currently, it is primarily homogeneous groups (‘white, aged 35+, male’) who benefit from key technologies such as smart homes, electric mobility and energy communities. E3 systematically analyses the barriers preventing different population groups from accessing and using these technologies, taking intersectionality (e.g. gender, income, education, housing type) into account. The aim is to develop a specification for fairer energy technologies that brings together technical, social and economic requirements. This is intended to promote innovations that strengthen equal opportunities and participation.

E3 focuses on urban areas where diversity is particularly pronounced. The combination of social science research, gender analysis and user integration lays the foundations for an inclusive and climate-resilient energy transition. By identifying specific barriers, assessing intersectional effects and deriving recommendations for action, the project contributes to climate protection, social justice and technological participation. The results are intended to lead to broader acceptance of energy transition technologies and ensure social, environmental and economic sustainability in the long term.
