Energy Lab East

Energie & Umwelt

An implementation concept for the expansion and grid integration of volatile renewable energies in eastern Austria is being developed under the premise that Vienna and the urban centres in Lower Austria will serve as an "energy sink" for the temporary surpluses from the Burgenland and Lower Austrian green power plants.

In the project region - consisting of the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland - almost a quarter of the final energy demand already comes from renewable sources. The energy strategies of the federal states require a further expansion of renewable energy production in order to reduce the need for fossil fuels in the long term. Electricity and energy generation from wind and solar power play an important role in this. The high volatility of these forms of energy requires new solutions for local, regional and supra-regional grids as well as for daily and seasonal energy storage and distribution.
