When new energy feed-in and consumption patterns emerge, the need for storage systems increases.

For bottlenecks in the grids, storage systems and their upstream converters can also provide corresponding grid services and contribute to security of supply.

The FACDS project deals with the definition of grid-supporting functionalities of future decentralised storage systems in electrical distribution grids with simulation-based validation at system level (grid simulation) and component level (control system development).

In addition, laboratory validation of the converter systems is carried out in FACDS.

The main component of the FACDS project is a real implementation of test systems in Seestadt Aspern.


Methodology

The part of the project carried out by Forschung Burgenland is primarily concerned with the development and evaluation of utilisation models for the storage systems. Due to the economic viability of energy storage systems, the focus here is on identifying and evaluating possible multiple utilisation scenarios.

For example, a storage system could be used simultaneously to support the grid, to increase voltage quality, as flexibility on the electricity market and to increase self-consumption by customer systems. In particular, the simultaneous requirements of the stakeholders in terms of performance and energy must be taken into account. On the other hand, there are legal and regulatory requirements that must be taken into account when developing multiple utilisation scenarios. The multiple utilisation scenarios will subsequently be implemented in the Aspern Smart City testbed.


Results

The storage systems analysed in the project are currently being examined and measured in the AIT laboratory and subjected to various technical tests.

At the same time, regulatory framework conditions and economic indicators have already been developed and initial basic scenarios for multiple utilisation have been identified.
