Innovation, research and development are considered to be key growth drivers for Burgenland companies in order to make Burgenland more attractive as a business location on the one hand and to remain internationally competitive on the other. The purpose of this study was to gain a detailed picture of the perception of research, technology and innovation among the Burgenland population and was conducted using electronic and personal interviews. The understanding of the extent to which Burgenland is associated with RTI was measured using association analysis.

While 12% of those surveyed in Burgenland do not recognise RTI at all, just under half of those surveyed believe that RTI is not widespread. A rather wide or wide distribution of RTI is given for 17% of the population. Just under half of those surveyed see Burgenland as a rather attractive location for RTI, with a further 12% clearly seeing it as "attractive".

Burgenland tends to be most associated with RTI by employees or civil servants in public administration who have completed at most an apprenticeship. No RTI activity at all in Burgenland is identified by people with a vocational secondary school qualification. In sectors such as construction, architecture and engineering as well as legal and tax consultancy, the view that no research, technology and innovation takes place in Burgenland is held relatively more frequently. The RTI activities perceived most by the population can be assigned to the focus area of sustainable energy. Almost half of Burgenland residents consider activities in this area to be at least fairly likely. The Burgenland population's perception of the focus areas of sustainable quality of life and intelligent processes is significantly lower, although older Burgenlanders cite above-average values. In terms of the highest level of education completed, RTI activities tend to be rated higher by people with at most an apprenticeship qualification, while those with a tertiary education perceive lower levels.
