The Parndorfer Platte is one of the windiest inland regions in Europe. For this reason, the first wind turbines were erected there more than 15 years ago. The increasing attractiveness of the town of Neusiedl am See as a favoured residential area and the associated population growth prompted the construction of a biomass heating plant including a district heating network in 2006 in order to cover the increasing demand for heat. This gives Neusiedl am See the unique opportunity to combine the electricity (wind power) and heat (district heating) sectors.
Based on this, a project was developed in which an innovative heat pump concept enables the efficient integration of wind energy into the district heating network. Intelligent sector coupling is intended to control the use of energy as efficiently as possible by maximising heat production from wind power and minimising the use of gas and biomass.
In the Smart City project "Hybrid DH Demo", the aim is to develop and realise further intelligent links between different energy sources in addition to district heating in order to use locally available resources as locally as possible. This will be achieved by realising an energy hub. By taking into account the energy sources electricity, heat and hydrogen, a cross-energy source supply hub based on renewable energies will be created. Stakeholders' needs are to be incorporated through the active involvement of all those affected in an open innovation process. The project thus combines the integrative involvement of stakeholders in and around Neusiedl am See with state-of-the-art and innovative technologies to utilise the local resource of wind power and realise an innovative type of energy supply that takes into account all the needs of those involved. The aim is to create new business and marketing models for wind power in order to bring production and consumption closer together in Burgenland.
