The town of Neusiedl am See is located in one of the windiest regions in Austria. Due to the expansion boom in renewable generation in Austria in the early 2000s, some of the turbines installed here have a service life of over 13 years. This means that these plants are confronted with the situation that they are no longer eligible for tariff subsidies for green electricity generation plants. The high penetration of renewable generation, which has a generation characteristic that is decoupled from consumption, results in local electricity surpluses that have to be transported via the electricity grid. This leads to an increasing load on the grids and can sometimes result in the need to expand the grid. The development of an overall concept for the urban hybrid energy system in Neusiedl should not only accelerate the additional integration of renewables, but also help to solve the problem of excess wind energy described above.

The overarching goal of the Smart City entry project is therefore to work out the technical, economic, legal and social aspects of developing a holistic concept for an efficient hybrid feed-in to the district heating network of Neusiedl am See.

Based on the district heating system, scenarios are to be developed and analysed as to how the existing energy system could be intelligently optimised in terms of its energy requirements and energy consumption structure, as well as implemented and made more sustainable for the absorption of regional renewable energy (e.g. wind energy or photovoltaics). Energy-optimised settlement development for the city and intelligent networking with the overarching energy system also play an important role here.
