As part of this pioneering research project, Forschung Burgenland is developing an advanced system for the thermal simulation of ceiling cooling and heating systems. The scientific focus is on concrete core activation, the thermal performance of which is analysed precisely using high-resolution CFD simulations in accordance with ÖNORM EN ISO 11855-2. The aim of the work is to create a digital twin that enables highly efficient and flexible system design for a wide variety of construction variants.
The methodological foundation rests on three central, closely interlinked pillars. Firstly, CFD simulation forms the basis for determining well-founded thermal resistances and performance equations. To verify these theoretical values, experimental validation is carried out in a climate chamber. Here, real-world interactions between surface and fluid temperatures are documented under controlled conditions and compared with the simulation data. The third pillar is the use of innovative, AI-based agents that enable efficient ‘rapid prototyping’. This artificial intelligence extracts geometric and material parameters directly from CAD sketches and, based on these, carries out automated parameter studies.
In addition to the primary investigation of concrete core activation, the model’s applicability to suspended cooling ceilings is being evaluated. The project thus makes a significant contribution to the technological advancement of energy-efficient building systems and modern air-conditioning solutions.
