Methods of interpreting European cultural heritage through tourism attractions

Economy

The MIECAT project is being implemented within the EU's Erasmus+ funding programme over a period of 3 years. The international project team has set itself the goal of creating an internationally accredited course on the methodical preparation of the interpretation of European cultural heritage for use as a tourist attraction.

Acronym

MIECAT

Project running time

01/09/2017 - 31/08/2020

The course is aimed at players in the travel and tourism industry. Cultural tourism has changed in the last decade to the extent that it is not just beautiful old walls that people want to see, but that demand for culturally unique experiences has grown. When travellers were asked about the most important reason for choosing a travel destination, "cultural heritage" was identified as the second most common reason (European Commission: Flash Eurobarometer No. 258, page 109). The tourism industry's offerings must also adapt to this change in travel behaviour in order to continue to be chosen as attractive destinations for a trip.

The course teaches core competences that include the following know-how:

- Research know-how to identify European cultural assets

- Regional specificity of cultural assets including methods for preserving provenance and originality

- Market analysis and best practice for tourist attractions per cultural asset class

- Methods of transfer and mediation of exquisite cultural assets

- Project and process planning of cultural events in the context of the travel and tourism industry

- Media presence & marketing in tourism per cultural asset class
