REEDUSE is investigating the technical, environmental and economic use of reed as a locally available, biogenic raw material in Burgenland. The aim is to develop modular, scalable concepts for small-scale and pilot plants that convert reed into high-quality energy and material products. To this end, thermochemical and biochemical processes such as pyrolysis, gasification and anaerobic digestion are being tested on a laboratory scale to produce biogas, biomethane, hydrogen and biochar. In parallel, research is being conducted into material applications, such as sustainable insulation or as a functional additive in asphalt and concrete mixtures.
The process pathways are evaluated in terms of efficiency, energy and material yield, and environmental impact. In addition, techno-economic analyses are carried out to derive viable utilisation concepts for decentralised applications. REEDUSE thus provides a scientifically sound basis for decision-making regarding the establishment of regional value chains, the sustainable transformation of the energy and building materials sectors, and the further development of the bioeconomy in Burgenland.
