Regional development of sustainability, environment and energy

Energie & Umwelt

Energy efficiency and the use of regionally generated renewable energy are two key mechanisms for achieving the goals of Burgenland's climate and energy strategy as well as the medium-term goal of climate neutrality (net zero emissions). The project supports the sustainable implementation of the energy transition in Burgenland and at the same time strengthens the region's RTI strengths in the areas of energy efficiency, digitalisation and sustainable energy generation.

The aim of this project is to reduce the final energy consumption of regional consumers (e.g. public companies and municipalities) through appropriate efficiency measures and at the same time to provide the energy through renewable energy generated as regionally as possible. Energy concepts are being developed on the basis of several use cases, which should be scalable to a large number of regions in Burgenland. The project supports the sustainable development of the region as well as the objectives of Burgenland's climate and energy strategy up to 2030.

The project is divided into the following main topics:

  • Efficient building systems and building processes
  • Digitalisation, data processing, complex monitoring
  • New technologies and concepts for the energy transition

The methods, measures and concepts to be developed focus on increasing energy efficiency and the supply of regionally generated renewable energy using modern digital technologies for data collection, analysis and evaluation. In addition to increasing energy efficiency, the measures should also focus on the greenhouse gas balance and the reduction of climate-relevant emissions. Through regional co-operation with public companies (e.g. Landesholding Burgenland) and selected municipalities (e.g. energy communities), concrete solutions are to be investigated on the basis of regional use cases, the results of which should be applicable to a large number of Burgenland regions. The regional buildings and systems will be considered and optimised holistically (energy consumption, regional centralised and decentralised generation, energy distribution and local storage).
