The increasingly rapid expansion of renewable generation technologies poses a number of fundamental challenges for existing energy systems. For example, the intermittent and often difficult-to-predict generation characteristics of photovoltaic or wind power plants lead to generation peaks that do not necessarily coincide with consumption peaks.
The S²4RES project is therefore exploring the possibilities of utilising seasonal electricity storage systems of different technologies (including sector coupling options) under the prevailing conditions in eastern Austria, especially in Burgenland. The current regulatory and legal framework conditions are also included in the analyses. In addition, the question arises as to what the necessary energy industry and regulatory framework conditions are that are required in order to be able to implement and operate seasonal energy storage systems.
The questions will be developed with the involvement of external experts/decision-makers and stakeholders and made quantifiable using techno-economic modelling. A requirements analysis for a demo project will also be created, which will help to trigger a project chain through this exploratory project.
