Heating and cooling in building technology in the low output range (<2 kW thermal) using a thermoacoustic heat pump

Acronym

Thermoacoustic_HP

Project running time

01/06/2016 - 01/03/2021

Projectbudget in EUR

<500.000

The aim of the Thermoacoustic_HP project is to research different thermoacoustic heat pump concepts in the low output range (<2 kW thermal), which can be used for heating, hot water and cooling applications in buildings.

The innovation lies in the research of heat pumps that function according to the thermoacoustic principle and thus do not require climate-relevant refrigerants.

Methodology

  • Development of a calculation methodology for thermoacoustic heat pump concepts tailored to energy-efficient building technology applications with component specifications.
  • Construction of thermoacoustic heat pump test units for the building services applications of heating, hot water preparation and cooling.
  • Laboratory experiment to investigate the thermoacoustic heat pump test carriers and their effect at system and concept level.
  • Imposing realistic loads with the help of hardware-in-the-loop simulations by coupling test carriers and system simulation software.

Results

At the end of the project, a heat pump test vehicle in the low power range should be available which is based on the thermo-acoustic principle and approaches the quality levels of conventional classic heat pumps. Suitability for building services applications is to be investigated by applying realistic loads.
