The project empirically quantifies the thermal performance of a dry-construction cooling ceiling system (TKS). In view of increasing energy efficiency requirements, TKS are being investigated as innovative, radiation-dominated cooling systems. The cooling capacity is essential for reliable design. Measurements are carried out under controlled laboratory conditions in a climate chamber with thermally activated walls.

The increasing demands on the energy efficiency of buildings call for innovative and responsive systems for regulating indoor temperatures. Drywall cooling ceilings represent a promising technology, as they combine radiation-dominated cooling with low thermal inertia. However, precise knowledge of the cooling capacity under varying operating and load conditions is essential for a reliable design. The use of a climate chamber with active thermal limit control (TAB walls) allows the wall loads to be decoupled from the ceiling load, thereby enabling an isolated analysis of the ceiling’s performance.

This project aims to empirically quantify the thermal performance of a novel dry-construction cooling ceiling system (TKS). The investigation is carried out under controlled laboratory conditions in a climate chamber equipped with thermally activated building components for precise heat load dissipation. The cooling loads are introduced into the test chamber by means of simulated heat emission (cooling load dummies that replicate human physiological heat production). The focus is on measuring the specific cooling load absorption by the ceiling system, as well as the parallel measurement of the ceiling’s heating output. The data obtained is used to validate simulation models and to precisely determine the heat transfer coefficient of the TKS, in order to assess its efficiency for use in energy-efficient buildings.
