Visible light based Person and Group Detection in existing buildings

In combination with the building management system, occupancy detection systems can significantly reduce the energy consumption of buildings based on various underlying technologies. However, most of the systems currently in use have the disadvantage that the integration and installation costs are very high. Especially for existing buildings, retrofitting such technologies tends to be costly and unprofitable. The motivation and aim of the project is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of an occupancy detection system based on visible light sensing technology, which is designed to differentiate between individuals and groups solely by detecting the reflection of visible light.

JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH - MATERIALS - Institute for Surface Technologies and Photonics has commissioned Forschung Burgenland GmbH to organise innovation workshops as part of the VILIPA research project (City of the Future, 8th call for proposals, FFG). The following focal points will be addressed:

Preparation and presentation of relevant standards and regulations regarding the refurbishment/replacement of lighting in buildings
Preparation and presentation of the relevant communication interfaces and data representation in a building management system
A workshop with the project partners to actively communicate the developed legislation and possible connections to a building management system, as well as the control strategies based on occupancy detection systems
Accompanying assessment of the drafted concepts and designs of the laboratory samples
Advice on creating the concept for transferring the project results to real-life application
A workshop with the project partners to create the transformation matrix and the stop/go decision
