Thermal analyses for the ZBG in Seestadt Aspern with non-limited active cooling and adapted specifications for the indoor air condition

As part of the project planning for the central vocational school building (ZBG) in Seestadt Aspern, the active cooling concept was optimised on the basis of numerical investigations in IDA ICE. The objective was to fulfil the requirements for thermal comfort in the cooling case within a defined tolerance band and to analyse the effects of the cooling concept on the symmetry of the thermal load for the geothermal probe field. In this way, the foundations were to be laid for reliable project planning of the HVAC systems and decision-making.

Numerical investigations from a preliminary project phase have shown that the intended cooling concept in the design phase for thermal conditioning of the building structure with a limited thermal output while maintaining a symmetrical thermal load on the geothermal probe field does not deliver satisfactory results. Especially when it comes to cosy indoor air conditions.

Based on the findings of the investigations described above and the conclusions derived from them, a concept for conditioning the building was developed to solve the problem of summer overheating and uncomfortable indoor air conditions.

For this purpose, the simulation models created in the pre-project phase were linked with the newly developed TGA concept for building conditioning in IDA ICE and subjected to a numerical analysis. The resulting findings served as the basis for further project planning and decision-making.
