Scientific support for the development of addiction prevention measures

Economy

The project generated insights into perspectives on addiction based on focus group discussions. The findings, set out in a non-public report, comprise aggregated information on different perspectives on addiction: (1) awareness, (2) description, (3) consequences, and (4) ways of dealing with addiction. This is followed by an explanation of the findings regarding young people’s communication and information-seeking behaviour, including a reference to the planned measures.

The health and wellbeing of young people are essential foundations for a sustainable society. Particularly during the sensitive phase of adolescence, many young people face challenges that shape not only how they deal with risks, but also their social, emotional and psychological development.

Addictive behaviour, whether in the form of substance misuse (e.g. alcohol, tobacco or drugs) or non-substance-related addictions (e.g. excessive media consumption, gambling), poses a serious threat in this context, which can significantly impair not only the quality of life of those affected but also their social environment.

The findings from focus group discussions are intended to inform decisions regarding the development of targeted measures for addiction prevention. The present study therefore aims to provide a scientifically sound basis for this endeavour. The topic of ‘addiction’ is addressed from various perspectives: awareness of addictions, a description of addiction, the consequences of addictive behaviour, and how to deal with addiction and those affected by it. In addition, insights into communication and information-seeking behaviour are gathered and analysed.
