Geothermal energy meets culture: pioneering project for sustainable energy

An innovative heat pump pilot system from Forschung Burgenland as part of the Danube GeoHeCo project makes the modernisation of the Güssing cultural centre a showcase project for sustainable energy use.

Eisenstadt/Güssing - 27 May. 2025 A pioneering example of sustainable building technology is currently being built in Güssing: an innovative heat pump system is being installed there as part of the modernisation and expansion of the cultural and congress centre. This pilot investment is part of the transnational Interreg project Danube GeoHeCo, in which Forschung Burgenland is involved as a central co-operation partner.

As part of the project, Forschung Burgenland is making a key contribution to promoting a sustainable energy supply in the Danube region. ‘The aim of the project is to integrate near-surface geothermal energy (geothermal heat) into existing heating and cooling systems as a climate-friendly alternative and thus contribute to achieving the EU climate targets for 2030 and 2050,’ explains Andrea Prochazka, project manager at Forschung Burgenland. The project is being supported by an interdisciplinary team from the Energy Transition and Building Technology research centres, consisting of Marcus Hofmann, Johannes Schnitzer and Artem Daminov.


Sustainable technology meets cultural landscape

In the first stage of the project, the consortium is developing a tool to support the evaluation and subsequent decision-making processes for the design of near-surface heating and cooling systems. ‘In addition, we plan to develop a community-oriented planning approach for the sustainable utilisation of the potential of near-surface geothermal energy in the Danube region in order to support and promote future local and regional measures and initiatives,’ explains Johannes Schnitzer.

In the final stage of the project, a web-based digital platform with an integrated virtual marketplace will be created to facilitate networking, future collaboration and the exchange of knowledge to promote the successful implementation of near-surface geothermal heating and cooling systems.
 

Digital, networked and future-orientated

As part of the renovation of the Güssing Culture and Congress Centre, the Danube GeoHeCo project is investing specifically in a modern heat pump system. The construction of the associated geothermal probe field is being supported both financially and in terms of content. The project includes comprehensive structural and energy modernisation: the original architecture will be retained and extended by a new open-air stage in the east. A geothermal system with 34 probes, each 120 metres deep, will supply the building together with district heating and photovoltaics - efficient, sustainable and forward-looking.

Interim results: interim conference in Eisenstadt
