Pinkafeld, 15.06.2024 - The Researchers' Day is organised annually by the Women's Department of the Province of Burgenland, in cooperation with the Burgenland University of Teacher Education and this year by those responsible at Forschung Burgenland. It is aimed at girls aged 9 to 11. Deputy Governor Astrid Eisenkopf emphasised in her welcome address: ‘Anyone who is interested in technology should also be encouraged in this interest. With the Women Researchers' Day in the Environmental Technology Laboratory at Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, we want to give girls the opportunity to try out these areas at an early age and slip into the role of a researcher themselves.’
Employees of the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences and Research prepared interesting stations and experiments. Magdalena Ringhofer was one of them. She is a research assistant at Forschung Burgenland and has been successful with her research projects in the field of building technology for many years: ‘The Women Researchers’ Day is an excellent initiative to show girls our working and research environment. The female researchers at Forschung Burgenland and FH Burgenland are committed, interested and work very successfully in research areas that are still heavily dominated by men. I am therefore all the more pleased that the girls can look over our shoulders on this day and that we can awaken their interest in technical and scientific professions.’
Almost half of all employees at Forschung Burgenland are female. Research Burgenland Managing Director Marcus Keding also emphasises this: ‘We clearly show that research - be it in the research areas of smart computing, sustainable energy supply or innovative energy systems - is not a typical “men's industry”. Unfortunately, however, not everyone realises that women can do any job in any industry. That's why we support the initiative to give girls the opportunity to experience how interesting technical professions are as early as possible in their education.’
Among other things, the girls were given a tour of the research building at Forschung Burgenland. The programme also included a presentation of the ‘mach MI(N)T’ website. Career videos of women in technology, science and research in Burgenland were presented. A craft upcycling station offered plenty of scope for creativity. The girls were also able to try out eye-tracking and emotion measurement as a method in research projects. Experiments on optics and optoelectronics were also carried out for demonstration and self-awareness, and Research Burgenland Managing Director Marcus Keding showed the children a mini-hydrogen car at the closing event.
