The scope of this project is the research and development of a new thermochemical pre-treatment for the energetic and material utilisation of residual materials. The development of a thermochemical pre-treatment process can raise waste management processes to a new, improved economic and ecological standard. The development of the new process means that fractions that cannot currently be recycled can be put to further use. The energy contained in the material flow is utilised in the process and the recyclable materials contained in the solid residue are recycled. This new development reduces the CO2 emissions of waste management activities, reduces the mass to be landfilled and cuts costs.
Initial situation: Waste management is increasingly developing into resource management, which goes hand in hand with a change in the way waste is viewed over time. Where previously waste may not have been considered at all, as this was not necessary, the approach has developed from the basic need for disposal, through the increasing development of efficient disposal structures, to an ecological and economic approach with the aim of closing cycles. In the mechanical-biological treatment of waste materials, part of the waste stream is already being put to good use, but part of it is still being landfilled.
Project objective: The aim of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of a plant for the thermochemical pre-treatment of residual materials using a currently non-recyclable fraction from mechanical-biological treatment, with the aim of recycling the valuable materials from the solid residues. The technical feasibility, economic viability, stability of a large-scale plant and the environmental benefits of thermochemical pre-treatment are analysed. The waste management objectives of the province of Burgenland are taken into account and the feasibility and significance for the province of Burgenland are analysed.
